Meet Coco

Chasseur de Truffes’

Our German Pointer Coco lives happily on our farm.
Fueled with love from her family and excited to sprint through the farm, ready to hunt for Truffles when the season rolls around.

Our energetic truffle hunter

This is our girl, our family member – Coco.

She is a young, full of energy German Shorthaired Pointer with beautiful colours of liver roan, pretty ticking and with an exceptional ‘Serbian line bred’ old pointer nose for the Truffle hunt.

Coco being a breed of dog used traditionally in France for truffle hunting, she truly excels as the perfect hunting dog. Much of her genetics & drive for the hunt has been utilised; yet her true gift is that nose.

She has been in careful training for our Truffles since she was 8 weeks old.  Still crazy as always for ducks and anything that moves, but the Truffière is her most favourite place to be in the world when she’s not cuddling up with the kids.

The truffle dog tradition

Since the 18th century, Truffle hunters have been using companion animals to aid in finding truffles.

Originally using pigs, many truffle hunters made the switch to special breeds of dogs due to their advanced sense of smell, agility and companionship – unlike pigs that are naturally destructive with Truffles and can be difficult to manage (all too many farmers have lots their fingers).

Dogs can be trained and had a dual-purpose of truffle hunting and hunting for game such as fowl.

Nowadays, at Truffière Duthil we pride ourselves on the relationship we have with our amazing truffle dog Coco, and give her a life full of adventure, love and play. She ensures we find our truffles as fresh as possible, enabling a culinary masterpiece for our customers.

Enjoy our truffles, knowing they have been an integral part of the kinship between humans and canines over the centuries.
